It’s the MGO! Methylglyoxal (MGO) is a naturally occurring antibacterial agent that gives mānuka honey a massive boost!
For centuries the Maori people of New Zealand have used the mānuka plant for its many health benefits, but only recently have discoveries been made regarding the healing potential of the honey bees make from the mānuka flowers.
Mānuka honey is not only eaten for its healing potential as a superfood, but it’s also used in skincare lotions and in the medical community for healing wound creams and wound care dressings. Many swear by its effectiveness with wounds and problem skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne.
Unfortunately, many consumers have been misled because of various rating systems. Most need translation to something meaningful. But NOT with Honest Honey New Zealand!
We use a simple, reliable system known as the MGO rating system. The MGO content is stated as a number, such as 550 MGO, which means 550 milligrams of MGO per kilogram of mānuka honey. The higher the rating, the higher the concentration potency of the MGO.
There is a lot of imitation manuka out there because it’s rare and desirable. However, mānuka honey labeled and packaged in New Zealand must adhere to the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) guidelines, which specifies all mānuka must be authenticated by independent testing for five specific attributes. One of these tests confirms the DNA to be authentic mānuka honey (species: Leptospermum scoparium).
We are proud to say all our mānuka honey is tested, certified, and packaged in New Zealand!
